An Education that Works

There is no profession that has the opportunity to shape tomorrow’s world more profoundly than teaching. Huntingdon’s major in Elementary Education/ Collaborative Special Education (EE/CSEd) is designed to prepare highly qualified and highly employable teachers through extensive classroom experience, intensive mentoring, elementary literacy training, and innovative teaching methodologies.

More than 700 hours of participation in field and clinical settings are part of the junior and senior years, ensuring that Teacher Candidates are ready to lead their own classrooms upon graduation.

Teacher Candidates and graduates of Huntingdon’s Teacher Education programs enjoy extensive assistance in finding teaching placements after graduation. The knowledge and skills gained in the program extend beyond the classroom as students Read Across America and participate in other service projects. Outstanding students may qualify for membership in education-related honor societies.

Elementary, Secondary, and P–12 Teachers

In order to teach in public schools in Alabama, most districts require that you earn a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved Educator Preparation Program, and be certified by passing the required examinations.

Elementary Teacher Education at Huntingdon College

Students preparing for careers as elementary educators major in Elementary Education/Collaborative Special Education. This field-based program provides Teacher Candidates (Grades K–6) with the knowledge and skills to have a deep and lasting impact on the lives of young children. Completion of the EE/CSEd major leads to eligibility for State of Alabama certification in two endorsement areas: Elementary Education (K–6) and Collaborative Special Education (K–6). After graduating and obtaining certification, Teacher Candidates are eligible to teach general education K–6 students in the general education classroom as well as those who have diagnosed disabilities in the inclusive classroom or in a specialized resource classroom.

Secondary Teacher Education

Secondary educators (Grades 6–12) specialize in their content areas and then energize middle and high school students’ minds to absorb and grow a passion for that content discipline. To prepare, secondary Teacher Candidates complete the Secondary Education or Secondary/Collaborative Special Education curriculum in Biology, English Language Arts, History, History with General Social Studies, or Mathematics; multiple field and clinical experiences; and coursework in the major. Huntingdon Secondary Education Teacher Candidates are eligible to teach Grades 6–12 students in their general education classroom, while Secondary Collaborative Special Education Teacher Candidates may also teach students who have diagnosed disabilities in an inclusive classroom or in a specialized resource classroom.

P–12 Teacher Education

Physical Education or Music Education majors will work with and impact students from the pre-school through Grade 12 levels. At Huntingdon, you may prepare to teach in P–12 Music—Vocal/Choral; P–12 Music—Instrumental; or Physical Education.

Facilities

Huntingdon’s Department of Teacher Education is housed in the Dr. Laurie Jean Weil Center for Teacher Education and Human Performance on the College’s Cloverdale Campus. Teacher Candidate field and clinical experiences are available in three counties.

Alumni

Hundreds of Huntingdon alumni are successful teachers and educational administrators in elementary schools, middle schools, junior and senior high schools, colleges, and universities nationwide. Huntingdon is known for producing well-prepared educators. Close advising from your faculty mentor, assistance from the Center for Career and Vocation (CCV), and first-hand knowledge of the field through your Teacher Candidate clinical experiences combine to prepare you well as you enter the teaching profession. Each year the CCV offers a Teacher Education Job Fair, inviting school systems from the region to interview Huntingdon Teacher Candidates for expected openings in the system.
